Steering making a crunching sound! Help!

I've got a 2001 astra coupe turbo. When the car is stationary and the steering wheel is turned, there is a a nasty crunching sound.

Its not loud but its definitely noticeable and its only audible when the car aint moving.
Is this a dodgy powers steering pump or something more sinister? The noise only appeared two days ago.

The car was in a vauxhall garage (in glasgow) from wednesday morning to thursday evening, for a seperate problem. They were trying to work out what was causing my speedometer and the rest of the clocks to stop working. I hope its just a coincidence but the noise only appeared when I got the car back from vauxhall.

The car is going back at some point this week for a new instrument panel but I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the crunching sound.

    Cheers!

Are you sure its not gravel in the tyre tread? Have you checked the power steering fluid level?

Power steering fluid seems fine, its almost at the maximum level. Definitely not gravel in tyres, that was my first guess!

In transit, its only there as the wheel is turning. Its hard to rtell but it sounds as if its getting worse. Just gonna avoid driving until it is booked into vauxhall.

Get someone to stand by the side of the wheels and check it's not a wheel bearing on the way out. Do both sides of course. Could also be related to why the speedo ain't working as the sensors usually in the hub and could be failing as the bearing fails.

    Just a theory.

Thanks oddjob, i'll try that tomorrow. The new instrument panel is pretty expensive so I'll get onto to vauxhall and get them to check it out too. ABS light keeps coming on randomly when the car is sittig idleing. This is weird.

I would also reccomend doing the same test from lock to lock on grass. Then you'll def know if it's something in one of the tyres.
