    would a 8v mk3 alternator fit a 16v mk4?

as the title suggests, would a alternator from a 8v mk3 fit a mk4 16v, or would it have to be a direct replacement?

Providing its from a mk3 with power steering it should fit.....saying that u may have difficulty securing it as the mounting positions may be different. I cant say for sure unfortunately.

I mentioned power steering as the manual steering versions had a smooth pulley whereas the power steering variants have a ridged pulley like the ones fitted to the mk4.

Have u got a pic of the mk3 one?

Also what rating is the mk3 one & have u got air con on ur mk4?
    (Mk4 models with AC use a 100amp alternator - non aircon use a 70a)

so weve established ur mk4 uses a 70amp alternator.....

this mk3 one ur on about.. is there a specific one ur lookin at or just thinking in general? As mentioned before - providing its from a power steering model and the rating is at least 70amp then you'll be fine.....or at least should be!

We ideally need a pic of an alternator setup on a mk3 to say it will/wont fit.

Failing that there'll be loads of bog standard 70amp mk4 alternators in breakers yards or even members on here who have upgraded to a bigger unit. Personally I have one removed from mine but am keeping it for a spare. May be advisable contacting the various Vx specialist breakers ie vauxbits to name one to see if they have one....or checking ur local breakers
