    gearbox problems,need help please

hi all, have noticed a wierd whistly, humming noise coming from front of my car (astra g 2002 1.6sxi) when de-accelerating was only doing it above 60 but now anything above 20,looked underneath and there loads of oil so took it to the garage and ive got a massive crack in the gearbox and guy said about to go at any minute.anyway wanted to know how much a gearbox is roughly and would it worth getting a reconditioned one or not and also how much am i roughly going to pay to have it fitted, guy at garage said £350 and thats just labour as it takes 7 hours to do,which seems way to expensive to me.help appreciated, cheers

Ask him if he's in the Vauxhall trade club. As he can buy recon Vaux boxes fro Vaux. If he isn't then find one that is. Its a big job but it don't take that long.

According the Autodata it takes 5:20mins tell him so.

F17 or F13? I have a spare F17 gearbox around, plus a B/N clutch release bearing in case you thought of replacing the clutch whilst the box is off, it may be saturated in oil.

I'm a bit of a distance from you though.
