ok, first off you need to use lots of degreaser to get the engine crud off.

then use white spirit/meths to get it free off soap etc.

then give it as good 'key' with 400 wet and dry (sand paper) - this gives the paint something to stick to.

then do a few light coats with plastic primer. (wait 24 hours)

then a very light sand with 600-800 wet and dry to make it as smooth as a baby's bum

then spray the colour on (and car paint in a rattle can will do) (wait 24 hours)

again a light sand with 800-1200 wet and dry

then spray a few coats of clear lacquer (wait at least 24 hours)

    then polish.

the water bottle top might, the others are a bit more rigid and should be fine.

The guys in RAF have access to paint that won't crack/flake... comes in gloss or matte black, and is used for Nose Cones on Jets. The sneaky aircrew paint their toe caps with it, so that they are permanently 'polished', never pick up scuffs, scratches or cracks - even when stamped on!!

High temp gloss on it after you've scuffed it should be fine.
