    Cleaning Throttle Body

    Afternoon all!

I was cleaning my engine over weekend, and noticed all the black crap around the TB butterfly, went to the my local motorparts seller who said the Astra's TB has a silicone coating and using Carb Cleaner with take this Coating Off!

    SO I BASICALLY WONNA KNOW

....................Is it safe to use Carb Cleaner on my TB!

Cheers n sorry for the essay!

P.S. Its a 1.8 (Z18XE) Coupe if that makes any difference

P.P.S I have looked at the How 2 (http://www.bramcote-ridge.org.uk/HowTo/TB.pdf) but just wont clarification!

sounds like a loads of bollocks to me

Either you leave it alone in fear of the mystery coating and let it get shitted up even more, or just crack on with it and get the bugger cleaned out

What use would this silicone coating have? Obviously isn't stopping it getting covered in muck, get it cleaned.

Ford put stickers on the side of their throttle bodys saying do not clean etc
Must have cleaned hundreds of em with carb cleaner and toothbrush and never had a problem
The coating they are warning about is supposed to prevent deposit build up hence don't clean off, but as we all know it does bugger all so go ahead and clean it
The only time carb cleaner causes problems is when rubber o-rings/gaskets are used, as carb cleaner tends to eat into them and cause air leaks etc

I used a ton of it cleaning mine. You could eat your dinner off it now (if you weren't having much, cos the plate's only 48mm across)
