    astra 2.2

    hey all,

as you may have seen my poll im thinking of upgrading my astra mid 2007.

i have decided on a 2.2 as insurance for me fully comp will be £1417 which is not bad as im 18 and that will be with 2 years NCB! or could get it now for £18?? something or other but thought ill save first. the MPG will be a slight bit better than a turbo and the 2.2 just seems a very strong engine!?

basically, im wanting to know what sort of power add-ons i can get for decent money. i know america is the best place to get parts for this engine but what sort of parts should i look for!? and how much gain do they give?

what sort of power do you 2.2 owners get at the moment?

how much should i be looking to pay for one!?
    private sale £????
    trade (garage) £????

    i was thinking somewhere around £6000 +/- ??

thanks all and thanks Ffoeg as i know your prob going to be the most responsive...

as for exterior mods just going to stick a GSi kit on it and thats sorted but its performance im after..

You want me to write an essay?

Seriously tho, when you get the car, run it for a bit and then decide how much more power you want, and I'll tell you how to get there. Mods can't be thrown at an engine willy nilly, as they all nedd to compliment and work together, so selection is very important

But having said that, all the usual stuff applies - cat back, remove precat, airbox etc

6 k will get you a good one, as for power, most peeps have near standard power, 2 zaffis in total vauxhall managed around 200bhp with cams, filter and exhauset mods.
throttle bodies are on the way with well over 200 bhp promised, so its not without potential but it seems without spending a reasonable amount of money not alot can be had from the engine. a remap and exhaust would be a good place to start from tho.
ffoeg is the 2.2 man on here
Fitted options: Folding mirrors, cruise control, dual tone horn, remap.
    Next: Bluetooth

Sticking a GSi kit on a 2.2 would make the insurance higher.. So would modding the engine. So wouldnt the insurance then be more than £1417?

I think if would be more cost efficient to go for a Gsi - they are cheaper now. Only downside is insurance, but they can be tuned for quite a low cost.

well i was thinking to start with is just a simple cat-back exhaust and a few dblias bits... eg the funnel (does the veccy c pipe fit the 2.2 airbox...?) and there induction air box thing...
then prob a remap and see how she is. then maybe after some good time of getting used to that power, and saving up the cash go for the heavy stuff like throttle bodies etc...

removing the pre cat? whats that involve, etc etc?

yeh i know this, but for a basic start its cheaper...and this are just idea's plans in the making, before i i change anything i would find out how much my insurance will be going up. but one can dream cant he, and then when i get more money i can add them on... plus there is so much more to a turboed car than the 2.2 and the running costs and services etc etc require a lot more attention and cost a lot more for fixing etc i just think from what iv heard the 2.2 engine is a bit stronger. and the 2.0T is just for fun if you have the money...?

    just my opinion!

None have my styling/suspension/brake mods have increased the premium, and the engine mods have only pushed it up by £55 a year, so that "a turbo is cheaper" idea doesn't always hold true
