    astra advice please..?

    hey all,

    i currently have a 3dr 1.6 16v astra.

basically i want a bit of advice, want to get a bit more power so... instead of the usual serious engine modding due to insurance im thinking in a couple of year or maybe one year. to upgrade engine size.

all body styling out of the question as what ever it is i get i will be GSi-ing it! unless already a GSi...

what do you recomend? and why?

    think of a 2.0 2.2 or a 2.0 turbo!?

has to be one of those so which is the best one you think i should get? average MPG specs, pro's and con's!

was thinking of going all out on my astra and turbo-ing it but just seams like to much money and too much hassle!

all help is appreiciated as im going to start saving now.

how much roughly think i will get for my 1.6 its good condition 56k im sure most of you have seen it so...

please vote in the poll and comment below if you have any advice

    thanks a bunch!

i drive a 2.0 sri and i think it's a good all rounder, but my stem seals have gone and i use alot of oil but i do alot of miles, i've been told it's a common problem as are manifold studs breaking. i would recommend a 2.2 though as i've not heard a bad thing about them! think thats where i'll be going next.

I'd go for the 2.2, categorically.

2.0's are old now, as they were dropped in favour of the 2.2, having said that they are still good engines

2.2's are bloody bombproof and very raley go wrong - the early ones did have cam chain problems, so if you get one I'd advise getting the timing chain changed immediately. Shop around and you might find one with the optional Prodrive kit on

2.0 turbo's are based on the 2.0 N/A, and seem to have a few inherany problems - AFM being one. The best choice if you want to gain easy power.

....but go and drive them all, check out insurance quotes and the decide for yourself what's best for what you want a car to do.

    cheers geoff.

i just think the 2.0 i have heard does have a few nigles, and the turbo is just twice as bad being the same engine but more pressure going through, 2.2 is the most likely as its a nice big engine, lots of power, lots of bits and bobs to tune maybe??

and assuming the insurance and tax and all the bits and bobs and MPG is all cheaper and better?

TBH there is sod all really tuning wise for the 2.2 in the UK, as most tuners will favour the turbo'd jobbies, but having said that it a lovely (modern) engine with bags of torque making it a very lazy drive, and it eats hills

yeh i find compared to friends 1.6's my astra with 5 people in pulls almost just as good as just me on my own, as apposed to my friends cars just slow right down. im 18, so theres a lot of parties going on and a group of about 10 of us, so always two poeople driving and in comparisons i think astra's have good torque

    just looked at this..

That's not bad at all considering you are 18. Very good in fact. Who's the company?
