    Clutch, gearbox, or driveshaft??? help

hello wonder if i can get some advice from somebody. was driving home from work today and stoped at lights on a hill. they changed to green and i went to drive....but all i got was a big clunk and a lot of revs. needlesss to say i had to get towed home. i think i might be the driveshaft or clutch. more inclined to the drive shaft as there was a big clunk and no warning that the clutch was on its way out. and help or advice would be greayly appreciated. its a mk4 sri 1.8 (2001 model) many thanks in advance!

could you select any gears at all? if it was a driveshaft snapped, or came out of the gearbox it would be visable from underneath the car like on the floor sort of thing.. so should take a quick look mate...

mate i had a good look around it they are not broke or lying on the ground but one of them seems to be vibrating in and out of the gearbox by about 2 mm. when the engine is idling slight clunking sounds can be heard. like a rattling clunky sound. whan i put it in any gear the rattling clunky sound get faster and noiseyer. however the sound returns to slight clunking when i push the clutch in.

Sounds like the box is buggered - F17's are a bit prone to this

Could indeed be the clutch. When my clutch had broken, it was making said noises. It was struggling to go into gear too, had to force it.

maybe i should of mensioned too that about 3 weeks ago the gearbox sump got smashed. it was replaced and new oil put in and had been ok since. 112000 miles on it, think its time to throw it in the bin. was gonna sell it about 3-4 months ago and decided to keep it. big mistake. everything has went wrong since

Sounds like a clutch related problem to me. Definitley if it's tight getting it into gear, that was my main problem and the clutch disc was snapped in half.
