There are 2 different classes of Bluetooth.
    1. 10m Version
    2. 100m Version guess what I'd recommend?

You may get signal degridation from running the usb cable so far. If you do intend to go that way, then use a powered hub mid point to boost the signal.

Is there any ghosting on the TV downstairs? How far is the run?

Bluetooth is good upto about 100m if I recall correctly, that is without any obstructions from walls, and other objects.

If USB extensions caused problems then it wouldn't have a market and they are being sold still. The USB extension is your cheapest option, but the keyboard and mouse is the best option, they look better lol

there are 3 power classes for bluetooth, 10cm 10m and 100m, remember that both devices need to be the same power class to get that range. Also, bluetooth operates on the same frequency as 802.11b/g/n wireless so you may not get the full range if there are a lot of wifi networks in/near your building

USB is actually not recommended for lengths over 5m without the use of a repeater. By hooking a power usb hub does not boost the signal so in reality of no real help on the transmission side, stick with a repeater if you will be using USB.

As for bluetooth those ranges are theoretical max's under ideal conditions and in reality in a home environment expect no better than 20m to 25m. For example in and motoring environment in tests I was part of, the max usable signal range we managed to get was approx 4.821m. While yes having many wireless networks will effect bluetooth the overall impact is less of an issue for bluetooth signals than it is for a wireless signals due mainly to bluetooth's ability to signal hop (Version 1.1 onwards but only really reliable from version 1.2 upwards.) and its lack of any major attenuation. Many wireless signals in a small area tend to be effected as there attenuated signals tend to interfer with each other to a greater extent.

As for the range of wireless keyboards again range will be no greater than 10m under ideal conditions (they do not have strong transmitters in them)but realistically unless spending a fortune on a setup that has a strong transmitter expect it to be no greater than 5m.

Which to go for really dependant on your setup really.

Of course it helps boost the signal otherwise all USB hubs would be passive.
