    dtm chris's Mk3 Astra diary....

January 2005 - I did have a nice 5 dr 1.4 GLS Astra, to which I fitted a V grill, the newer headlights, sport bumpers, 15" GSi alloys, sport rear lights and loads more mods. Then on the way to work one morning (Jan 18th), wet road, not paying attention, crap tyres = me ending going into the back of a 44 tonne truck and trailer. I ended up breaking this car for bits as the chassis had splitting the engine bay.

February 2005 - The hunt was on for a replacement run around and I managed to find a 3dr 1.6 Astra Cesaro which I paid £650 for. But I was not 100% happy with the car (even though the car was OK apart from a few dents in the rear quarter) and it was a case of having to drive it every day.

March 2005 - I then saw this Astra Sport being advertised in Newcastle,it had the GSi bumper, phase 1 lights and GSi grill fitted and inside had the phase 2 GSi interior panels fitted. So I caught the 06:30 flight from Stansted and met the bloke at the airport and drove the car back home. I then drove it for a week, and parked the car up till I sold my Astra 1.6 Cesaro.

April 2005 - I fitted the Astra GSi alloys from my red 5 door Astra 1.4 GLS (that I put into the back of a truck in January 2005!), and the electric sunroof from the same car. Also, swapped the white oval side repeaters over from the Cesaro to the Sport.

May 2005 - The Astra Cesaro finally went, so it was time to start work on the Astra Sport. The previous owner did not know when the cambelt was last changed so I made that my first priority. I spoke to my friendly Vauxhall mechanic, and he supplied and fitted the cambelt, tensioners, rollers and water pump for £200 using all Vauxhall parts.

June 2005 - Managed to find an Astra GSi rear bumper on Ebay from Cossvaux for £50 + £15 P&P. I asked for them to send ASAP as I was on holiday towards the end of the month. It still had not arrived by the time I went.

July 2005 - Back from holiday, still no bumper fed up. Sent snotty email to Cossvaux - no reply. Referred to Paypal and managed to get £50 back out of the £65. Gave up on the GSi idea so, sold the Astra GSi front bumper. Then bought an Astra Sport front bumper off Ebay for £20. I then bought a pattern front grill for £18 and modified it by just leaving the one big bar accross the middle and the badge. I managed to pick up a set of standard Calibra silver dials at Billing.

August 2005 - Managed to get the bumper and grill painted, so I fitted them to the car. Also, managed to set of 16" 10 spoke alloys as fitted to the late Astra SXi for £125. They had 2 good tyres and 2 poor tyres and had minor scratches over them.

September 2005 - Spoke to my brothers mate, and he is going to refurb all 4 alloys for £50. Bonus. I bought 2 x Toyo T1-R tyres from www.blackcircles.com to fit these alloys before they are painted and some flush fitting tyre valves from Demon Tweeks at Trax.

October 2005 - Still my brothers mate has not picked up the wheels. So I asked my usual guy to do them. He said £100, so I dropped them off before I went on holiday and he is to do them for when I get back as he goes on holiday. I get back from holiday and he has not do them, so I have to wait anther 3 weeks for them to be done as he is on holiday to Florida.

November 2005 - Finally managed to pick the wheels up and get them on the car! I just needs lowering now. So I did a bit of phoning around trying to get a 40mm drop on the front and 60mm on the rear. No chance everyone said, apart from Roadrunner. They sold me one pair of front springs 35mm drop, and another pair for 50mm drop at the rear for £120 inc delivery. I managed to pick up a spare engine, including loom, chipped ECU, lexmaul manifold, etc. for £100. So I fitted the superchip and manifold and cannot wait to get it on a rolling road to see what the power gains are.

December 2005 - I am itching to get the springs fitted, but I am out of a job on the 23rd December so I am try on conserve my money this month. Nearly crashed the car twice on 2 different roundabouts due to the crap Dunlop SP9000 tyres on the rear wheels, so I got out my flexible friend and bought 2 x Toyo's to match the front pair. The tyre fitting place kindly scratched on of the alloys fitting the tyre!! Also, I bought a VX220 aerial for the roof as it has a shorter mast.

January 2006 - Cheap mods this month as no job yet. So I took the badges of the boot lid and fitted new number plates with no screw holes and stuck them on. Also, I managed to get some smoked side repeaters so they will be in the post. I finally managed to get some phase 2 headlights and a debadged phase 2 front grill from LMF.

February 2006 - An expensive month!! MOT was due, so I knew that the handbrake was a bit dodgy so I jacked it up and found a spring missing and the handbrake cable nearly worn through. So I booked it in with a mobile mechanic to supply and fit a handbrake cable and fit the missing return spring, that was £75 gone. Booked the car in for an MOT (for £40) and it failed on rear brake pipes, front brake pads, rear brake hoses, number plate light bulb. So I got that all done along with my lowering springs fitted, new inserts on the front, new top mounts (they were an advisory) and £410 later that was all done. Time for a retest, another £20 and it passed. Thats that sorted for another year!!

March 2006 - I thought it was time to change the speakers in my Astra,so I obtained some speaker adapters and then went to www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk to purchase some Pioneer replacements at a reasonable price. I managed to fit them all during a couple of evenings.

April 2006 - Starting get bored with the Astra, so started to look around for other possible cars. After visiting www.autotrader.co.uk and deciding that a Mk4 Astra is a little too pricey I decided on a Vectra V6. The hunt was on.

May 2006 - I found a Vectra for sale in a garage for a nice price price. I viewed it and then test drove it and left a deposit. At the weekend, I was back down there and driving my V6 back home. I wished I had kept my Astra as the first month of ownership turned out to be rather expensive. As this is an Astra site I wont bore you with the details.

June 2006 - I took the car to PV as I was not insured on the Vectra, plus there was a chance I could sell the car. Unfortunately, there was some interest but no money changed hands. One of my brothers mates girlfriends was looking to buy a car and ended up test driving it and then buying it for a £1000. And thats the end of my Astra ownership for now, but I shall be back as my father has a black Astra Coupe turbo and he will not keep it for ever!
