    Debit card, poss fraud question

Had a long hard day so poped to the lil off licence and picked up pack of 4 coronas and a bottle of coke.

Chip and pin took a while but then they took my card out of the lil reader and swiped it through something similar to a till, but then they put it in a piece of paper and swiped it again then entered all the numbers on the front of the card, then a reciept came out. I'm gunna keep an eye on my bank account over the next few days, and i informed the police (due to the area).

Were they making a copy of my card or am i just over suspcious?

maybe the system has failed and it could be called through to the bank. so they take a swipe of it to prove that theyve seen it! but i would still keep an eye on it

Can't be too suspicious with stuff like that, just keep an eye on it.

they do this if theres problems with cards, if their server is busy, or the card wont swipe properly, or sometimes if the card has been used a few times that same day. A shop i worked at years ago did exactly the same.

Could be dodgy... but seems genuine practice to me

yep my card is currently faulaty, its got damaged form all the crap in my pockets from work. Due to it being faulty the shop assistance have been doing exactly the same as above and they have done to cards in the past (I go through about 2 a year). As above though keep an eye on your statement (you should anyhow) but it is standard procedure and nothing untoward should have taken place.

report it if you think its dodgy, although as others have said its a backup proceedure for when the electronic way fails.
