    Engine cutting out and hunting

    hi all

out in the car last nite, as i pulled up to a set of traffic lights the engine cut out, this happened a couple of times on the journey. also noticed when coming to a halt the idle was dropping off to about 500rpm and then picking back up to around 800rpm. it wasnt doing it all the time just occassionaly.

any ideas what the problem may be? gunked up ICV? AFM dying?

    any help appreciated

    cheers
    gareth

might just be a electrical surge, or something? :S

What size and model of engine, different engines have different solutions, 2.0 for instance has an ICV but later models don't, early 1.8 has an EGR later ones don't. Need more info.

first port of call is to give the ICV, EGR & TB a good de-gunking with carb cleaner. Make sure u wipe away any residue around the butterfly as any carbon buildup here would mean restricted airflow at idle and therefore choking the engine of air >> trying to stall.

This is perhaps the most common fault on Astras so either do a search or check the "How To's" for tips and advice on how to clean the necessary components if u arent too sure.

If this doesnt work then let us know.... maybe need a new ICV/EGR for instance.

Good luck and hopefully your problems will be rectified asap.
