    HPI Checks

Where is the best/cheapest place to have these checks done?

if you have bought a car from a trader that has been in a accident that they have not declaired to you, what legal rights do you have?

    cheers

An HPI check can only be done by HPI.

Don't be confused with other organisations who use the term "HPI" but have no connection with HPI.

RAC did my HPI check when I had a full inspection done by them on the car. Cost me £16. They charge £25 normally. Just google it!!!!

Other companies can do HPI checks for you. Its just a computer database of info on every car so other companies can query it.

As for a legal standpoint most people will write sold as seen on the receipt. However if you asked the person "Has the car been in an accident?" and the person answered no, even though they knew it had. You will have some legal grounds. Best thing is to go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau. The only problem is proving the other person lied to you.

If the check isn't done by HPI itself, there's no minimum standard of information checked.

HPI have tried unsuccessfully to stop others using the term for similar, but less stringent checks.

For £15 you WON'T get a full HPI.

You are wrong, as RAC sent me a copy of the HPI check and its on headed paper from HPI. If you look at HPI's website and see what they check, then take a look at RAC's website and see what they check and its all the same.

RAC could not claim to do a HPI check on your car if they are only doing a partial check, as they would legally have to declaire that to you some how.
