Do you work in the rail industry?

Right I'm getting itchy feet so on the lookout for a new job - I wanna stick in Rail because I enjoy it, it's interesting, pay is good blah blah blah.

I work for an engineering company as a consultant at the moment, I'm getting forced down the project management route but I don't really enjoy it, I much prefer being out on site walking track all day in the pouring rain than sitting behind my desk all day long.

So if you work in the industry what do you do, who do you work for, pros and cons etc.

I'm hoping there's a couple people in A-S world that work in rail

    I used to

I was doing environmental and off track consultancy work for GTRM and AMEC. Easy money really writing indepth reports because Railtrack said they needed to be done.

Roughly how was your time split between office and track work?

A VERY long time ago I worked for a summer job in bridge assessment, but that was more time spent working out Abnormal load routes than bridge defects.
why do today what you can...... I'll finish this later

It varied between surveys, but in general it was 50/50. So a one day survey would mean a day in the office typing it up and a 3 month survey...etc etc.

It was a OK job, but being away from home in B+B all week got to me after a bit. I just missed the personal freedom in the evenings
