Mobile Sat Nav or Dedicated Sat Nav ??

As title... Im considering getting Sat Nav - kept putting it off until now as it just seems the next sensible step.

    Now Ive got 2 options:

    1) Pay approx £60 and get it to work on my mobile (N73)

    or

    2) Pay anything from £100 upwards and get a dedicated unit

Been looking at the Navman ones lately - which look quite compact. I dont really want a big windscreen mount jobbie but seeing as I have my Snooper in the Sat Nav location on the console then my ideas for mounting are running out. Thats why the mobile solutiong seems a good idea.

I wouldnt need it all the time so cant really justify spending hundreds of pounds on a unit.

    Opinions please!!!!

Also if I do just go for the mobile option - I will need a GPS receiver (had for about £30 on fleabay) and a Mini SD card with the software pre-loaded... any idea where the best place to get one of these from is?

Can software also be copied from one card to another ? or is it protected with a product key for instance.

    Any help would be appreciated

** wasnt sure if this should go into electrical forum but seeing as its general and not technical think its best here**

I have tomtom and its great.. I would choose a dedicated using and just use the windscreen mount as when when its needed..

In work they had phones with satnav programs and they were shit.. IMHO, this type of software is just too heavy for a device to run it AND also function as a different device ( phone ). The phones crashed all the time and the satnav program just hung during long journeys..

Anywayz, my thought = Dedicated device.. You could also get rid of the snooper as the satnav will take car it that job..

Thanks mate - I could get rid of the Snooper but I spent ages fitting it into the dash! Guess I could mount the Sat Nav there instead... who knows!!

    You recommend TomTom then?

I have not used much of the other brands available so I can only say that I have not experienced "technical" issues with the Tomtom and from what I can gather, every brand has its navigation glitches..

If I were you Id have a look at the forums here - http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ - and see wich one you like the most.. You could also go to Halfords and have a play with the different ones..

One thng is for sure, for someone like me who has the sence of direction of a floating fart, they are sooooooooooooo useful.. makes driving much less stressful when you go somewere new..

I have tomtom mobile running on my N70 and its fabulous, runs perfectly well.
Has got me to and from newcastle, and manchester, and cardiff etc.

Only cost me about 50 quid to get set up too.

I've always thought the screen is too small on a mobile to safely use while on the move.

The only dedicated units I would consider, and I speak from personal experience are Tomtom's widesceens and the new 'One' or the Garmin Nuvi's

Same here i'm running it on an N70, was cheap to install & works perfectly!

The software is exactly the same as is on the TomTom units as well, but a damn sight cheaper. Obviously if you're going to be using it heavily, i'd recommend a stand alone unit, but for the ocasional use the mobile one is great!
