problems with my external hard drive

Can any one help I have a problem with my external hard drive.

Its got power and my PC picks it up, however if I go into control panel-->system--->Hardware-->Device Manager--> Then select Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

The device is shown there (USB Mass storage device) however it has a caution symbol over it. If I click on it I get:

This device cannot start (code 10)

any ideas as I can not access a lot of my files and all my music

    cheers in advance.

Bit of a long shot, but try uninstalling it in device manager and rebooting. You may also want to try it in a different USB port.

You will force it to rediscover it that way.

When you say you have tried to update the driver with no luck do you mean, you have installed the latest drivers but it hasnt helped? or that you have been unable to update the driver?

Try Blistz advice. If that doesnt work try it on another PC if poss, at least this'll tell you whether its the device or your PC at fault

Have you recently moved it from direct PC connection to a USB hub?

Reason I ask is a lot of these USB hard drives really don't like running off a hub...

worst case scenario you can always take the HDD out of the casing and connect it to your pc to retrieve data

Just be careful coz if its still in warranty you can kiss that goodbye You need to determine whether its the PC or the drive thats causing the issue first

I have been trying to get this to work today with no luck

I have tried it other USB slots and it is connected directly to the PC and not a hub. I tried it in Sarahs lap top but no joy however that may be sheilded from inputing devices being a school laptop.

One thing though I do get a noise to say a new device has been installed on my PC but it then clicks off againa straight away, this has got me to think it could be a faulty connection?
