have i had my botty spanked on my vauxhall 40k service

I had a 40K sevice + cambelt and waterpump done at a vauxhall approved service garage...(Coupe Turbo)

    They charged me £391;
I provided; oil, oil filter, tensioners and waterpump (I provided wrong cambelt)

    they provided; belt, toothed
    anti-freeze 1 litre
    pollen filter
    fuel filter

They also changed the brake fluid.

parts came to 47.40+ vat and labour was 286 +Vat

They charged for 4.4 hours labour at £65 per hour???

    £65 per hour? Big windows?!

Seriously though, thats extortionate. And I bet they pay the monkey doing the work £5.50 per hour. And thats why all the top execs can afford Monaro's or whatever. (One sales exec up here has a Porsche with number plate V1SON - he runs and owns 'Auto-Vision!')

i use a place and they charge £15 an hr, so at least i know what basis they work there jobs on

Unfortunate BUT learn from it and ask next time how much in time and money itll be

TBH, i would expect to pay £400 for cambelt + a service at vaux. The service on its own is close to £200 isn't it? Brake fluid change is £30-£50.

when vuahxall charge say 5 hours labour doesnt mean it takes them 5 hours,

they have a list of how long every job "should" take, so for example if a cambelt was listed to take 5 hours, thats what the customer would be charged, no matter if it took 2 hours or 7 hours,
BUT if the mechanic could do do the 5 hour job in 2 hours, he/she would get 3 hours overtime/bonus paid to him/her and they would still charge the customer the full 5 hours,

it means the customer gets a fixed price, the garage can make more money if there staff work fast, and the mech gets more money if he works fast, so basically everyone wins (except the customer in most ways...lol)

£391 does seem a little high tbh but a cambelt is one of those things imo to pay a little extra to get done properly and know if its snaps your covered,
i paid a vauxhall mechanic £100 to do mine (inc an oil change) and parts were £50 iirc,

Vauxhall will just go by book times and their hourly rate. TBH £65 a hour at a main dealer is probably about right, us at a independant workshop charge £45 a hour

I have a local garage i use which are good... like you say AndyR though; seeing as it was cambelt time - i thought i would get a vauxhall stamp and get someone to do it that had done it before.

funny though.. the mechanic brought the waterpump in and said do you want me to fit this?..

I said yeah, may as well whilst the belt is comming off.

he said, ive never seen one go.
