    Alternative sporthatch/coupes

Right, im thinking of buying a new car next year in time for the summer. Top of the list are an ACT, a GSi and an Sri-T but im seeing what other alternatives there are, for under 10k or so.

Seen some BMW 318CI coupes around 02 plates for 8k-ish with not too OTT mileage on them. Theyre lovely cars IMO but a 0-60 of 9 seconds and 150bhp they obviously dont compare to the Z20LET powered cars ive got on the list, and with the beember insurance being double that of the vauxhalls for me i dont know if it warrants the cost.

Other obvious ones are the ST170 focus, Golf GTI, Leon Cupra but i dont know much about these. Also considered an S3 and a TT, but again im not sure. As much as i'd love something small and sporty i like the convenience of being able to stuff my bike in the boot.

Any other suggestions happily welcomed (as thats the point of the thread) but bear in mind im 20 (will be 21 when i get it though), so nothing too crazy.

GSi or ACT make the most sense from a power for your cash and running costs point of view. Leon 20vT would be another good option. The Focus ST170 handles very well but has very disappointing performance imo.

    Wouldn't go near a 318 bmw personally.

Any reason why not the beemer? Other than insane servicing and parts costs?

I wouldnt consider getting a brand new Mini Cooper S as my dad works for them, but my sisters just ordered one!

For me a beemer has to have a nice straight six, cow seats and all the toys. A 318 is just for people who need a badge. Well built yes but so is a golf.

    Just my opinion of course.

Peugot 406 coupe 3.0 V6? Not the best drive in the world but they look very nice and you can pick up a good spec one pretty cheaply now.

TBH though, sensible money is on the astra coupe turbo.

I do kind of agree with you actually there Sten for the majority of BMW drivers. The bonus of me getting a beemer though is my dad works for them and my workmates brother works in the parts department at the local stealer so i'd probably get some good priced bits (which would still probably cost the earth though).

If i save my arse off could probably stretch to a bit more than 10k, so feel free to suggest 'non pikey' BMWs!

406 coupe is out on 2 terms - 1. Its french. 2. Im only going to be 21 when i get it so a 3.0 V6 is well out of the picture.

edit: On another note - how come the GSi has held its price so much better than the coupe turbo? I dont think ive really seen that many more ACT's than GSi's on the road.

A 323Ci would be the starting point for me, could probably get a well specced one for under £10k now. Insurance would probably be an issue though. At the end of the day I would still take a GSi or ACT over one though.

The ACT has been out for longer, simple as that really and the GSi is a bit better specced with the recaros etc.

Dont bother with a TT. Mum has a 225 and only good thing about it is the interior, rest I would throw in the bin.
Leon Cupra R are very nice
