Question Opps - Coupe Boot Crome Strip

I decided to wash my car, and when i was washing the boot i saw that my crome boot strip had come away at the end, so me being me, i put my finger under it to see how it was held on. Now it does not clip back on for about half the length of it.

    How are they held on?

I dont want to take it right off if it wont clip back on, but its half hanging off atm

All i can see is metal star washer type things, that are rusted and broken up. The crome strip has come away from the plastic bit that is on the car.
