    Question Computer genius required

    Hey all,

I need to put a nee harddrive in my dell pc due to failure of the old one. My question is when i pulled the old harddrive out it says its an enhanced IDE. when i put ide into dabs it brings up 3 ide as well as ATA100 & ATA133. Am i correct in thinking these are the same thing just different names from manufactures. The important question is can i put any of these in my DELL P.C?. Its a DELL dimension 8300 with 80GB western digital harddrive. ps harddrive direct from DELL are a ripoff.

    Cheers, Danny

EIDE = modern IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) ... E = Enhanced.

ATA100/133 is the transfer rate between the HDD and the Motherboard.

Doesnt matter which you pick really, though I'd opt for the ATA133, price is prob the same.

Try and find one with 8Mb cache

If you buy it, and it doesnt fit, you can just pick up HDD enclosures, which normally comes with a circuit to convert the connecter to a usb connector. But if its your only drive, you may have to change your bios settings

some motherboard/bios setup's allow you to boot from HDD enclosures.

I have a bootable version of linux on my portable hdd (laptop hdd in a caddy) which is great when you turn up at a customers that can't remember any of their passwords, and the Administrator account is locked (Windows).
