    Astra G SRi overheating

Sorry if this has been covered before but i have spent a good few hours searching thru Mig and Astra sport and havent came across this problem anywhere

I cant get the fan behind the rad to come on at all, i ve shorted out the pins on the fan switch which didnt work.

When that didnt work i got my test lamp out and there is no voltage to the switch.

I ve took the fan plug off as well and checked voltage.....nothing!!!

In the manual it says when no voltage prob the relay, all fuses in the fuse board are okay but there doesnt seem to be any relay in the fuse box Is the relay for the fan in the box in the passenger wheel well behind the bumper? I ve not been able to jack the car up to pull that down and get a sniff inside it.

The temp gague on the dash never goes above half although on almost every drive when i take the expansion cap off the water is bubbling and boils over, i dont wanna drive it much longer like this!

The Aircon fan kicks in eventually and usually stays on for a few seconds and i can keep the aircon fan on for safety but really need to get this fixed ASAP! as i ve got a 500 mile trip to take very soon!

thanks in advance for all your help!

    cheers
    Andy

It's most likely the fan controller. Is the little orange cooling system light on in the dash?

yeah mate, the light comes on occasionally, is there much to changing it?

Is it a common fault and not worth messing around with breakers yards?

    What usually goes on them?

    cheers mate

It's not a common fault at all. Trace the wire back to the controller box, which I seem to remember is under the front bumper.

the controller box is at the bottom left of the rad as you are sitting in the car. its like an ecu just for cooling, they are about £70 from a dealer then £30 to programme them

i ve wired a temp switch up just to get home, ill need a more permanent solution sorted soon, looks like a new fan controller ecu then, does it have to be the dealer that programs the ecu?
