on my astra sri-t sometimes when i stat it up the bottom of my windscreen starts to mist up and there is sometimes a damp/oldperson smell
has anyone else came across this or is this acomon thing for astras....
Its not a bad thing, its just the cold damp air in the system. Mind and run it for 15 minutes once a month to keep the seals lubricated.

I'd disagree here guys. The smell is almost certainly the pollen filter. The AC would only smell I'd imagine when it was used, however the pollen filter is well known for stinking after a couple of years. It's in a compartment behind the glovebox, before you ask. Check E-Bay as they can be had cheap on there, I got a few for 99p each a year or so ago. Mine wasn't smelling but was pretty grubby when I changed it. It stopped the screen misting up as well, which is another sign of a dirty pollen filter.

As Oddjob says, it's most likely the pollen filter. They get bogging dirty after a year - another item on Vxl's service schedule that's not changed anywhere near enough.
To totally sort out the problem, I've done the following:
1. Remove pollen filter and vacuum out the housing
2. Fit new pollen filter
3. Get one of the aircon deodoriser/steriliser things out of Halfrauds. It's like a bug-bomb. It's an aerosol can you place inside the car, leaving the aircon running in recycled air mode. Let the can rip then close the door. The stuff will be drawn in to the aircon and will clean out all the bugs.
If you want to do it the really cheap way, you can spray some of the Dettox deodorising air freshner under the glovebox with the aircon on recycle. Does a similar job.

does it leave a smell in the car ? cause i was thinking about doing this
No the a deodorising thing so no smells are left
i just had a service done. they changed all the pollen filters etc is it worth doing ? just to clean it up..
its definetly the pollen filter. i had this problem changed the pollen filter at the weekend now no nasty smell. my old pollen filter was that dirty when i pulled it out some dirt was left in the housing so i vacced it out to avoid any dirt possibly getting blow through the vents.
