    Unhappy 1.6 8v stalling

    Help guys!

My mum has a 03 plate mk4 1.6 8v AUTO LS Astra with only 15k on the clock.
We have had this problem since Sunday after 3 years of faultless driving.

The Emission light appeared on the dash board on her way home but the car drive fine. I looked at it at home after the car cooled and cleaned the cold start (front) O2 sensor connector, MAF sensor and general plugs. Started the car and the light was gone. Sorted I thought but then next day it appeared but this time the car stalled while driving (not stopping of slowing) she started fine but the light was back and it ran a little funny. Cleaned stuff again changed Air filter as was alittle clogged but its been getting worse. Now it will stall when idling but it doesn't struggle and stall it just dies in a click of a finger.

Its been to an Independent Garage who just have normal diag's and they said Crankshaft Sensor which we replaced but the problem is still there, plugged it in again and ecu still thinks it Crank sensor again!

Anyone had or heard of this problem before? We have ran out of ideas what to check and don't want to keep changing sensors.

    Thanks

Check the wiring to the sensor. Have you cleaned the idle air control valve? or throttle bodies? When was it last serviced?
    Its a jam thing

I had this problem with my 1.6 8v (2000 v reg) where I was driving down to town (down hill, in 4th gear) and all of a sudden I lost all response of the accelerator.

I pulled into a side way, and started it, but as soon as it hit idle speed it stalled.

Called AA out, they disconnected a valve sensor (i think) and asked me to start it, car started and idled fine but EM light was on.

He then sprayed the injector with carb cleaner and tried again with sensor on, car started and idled fine.

Went to drive it up and down a road (on a hill) and got to the bottom and tried turning around and it stalled, started and idled ok again and went to drive to the top of the hill, stalled again.

He done a bit more spraying whilst revving the engine like hell, and he then followed me all the way home (down hill) and the problem disappeared.

Get some redex in there and rev it like hell.

    Gav

    Please dont do that!!!!

Do the obvious first... i.e clean the throttle body, ICV (Idle Control Valve) & EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve) with carb cleaner.

Its easy to do - just remove the air filter and induction pipework. The ICV & EGR are just held on with 2 bolts each. Remove these from car and give them both a damn good soaking of carb cleaner - clean the throttle body itself (ie the cast part with the butterfly - operate the throttle by hand giving a good clean with a lint free rag to ensure all surfaces are clean and free of carbon deposits.

Refit the components and report back.

You could try some redex as mentioned earlier - but follow the above first - then if u do try it then 'dont rev it like hell' as that particular member says!

Maybe a good service wouldnt go amiss. Particularly filters and plugs.

Good luck and please let us know how things go.

Ive got 1.6 8v and mine kept cutting out and it was doing my head in. It would just juder and die, our if i was stopping at traffic lights. Found out it needed an update on the E.C.U, which bypassed the E.G.R valve, it cost me about £80 and i havnt had a problem since. hope that helps and hope u get it sorted soon.

Thanks for the advise guys, I have been out there today and fingers cross, have sorted it.

Dam EGR valve it was.... took it out and cleaned it with carb cleaner and scraped the crap out of it. Popped it back on and bingo. Have popped it on Mum's shopping list to get a new one sometime soon.

    Cheers

Fingers crossed thats all it was. If u do need a new EGR then get one on ebay - a brand new one of course - but sometimes u can pick em up for just a few quid! Failing that theres loads of Vx specialists who trade on ebay selling em for a lot less than the stealers..oops i mean dealers.

    well....

I've had the bunny hop and stalling problem for a while, and vx done a tech 2, which found that the ECU failed with no fault codes. they are going to replace it soon (£234.72) which fingers crossed will resolve it.

ps, I had done all the EGR cleaning etc and it made very little difference in my case.

I spoke too soon. The problem is back. It only does it after the car is totally hot and it left to stand for 5mins or in heavy traffic then it will have problems starting and running. Seems like something gets too hot when the under bonnet temps get higher than normal running temps.

I have ordered a new EGR from a mate to see if that will sort it.
