Z20LET: can i remove the sound deadening?

Has anyone ever removed the big ass black mat thats fixed to the underside of the bonnet, on their Z20LET? I understand it's just for sound deadening, and acts as a heatshield (since theres a metal chunk above where the turbo is).

I'd quite like to take it off to see if increases engine noise and/or saves a wee bit of weight. But I'm worried i might break something by taking it off.

    Any comments?

Took mine off, can hear my turbo whistling up a treat. Underside of bonnet can get a bit mucky though mind.

i took it off my 1.8, made no real difference to noise just made an extra part of the car that needed cleaning all the time,

id leave it on the Z20LET, but that may be as mines silver and think it looks better on, on a red/blue it might look better off
