Does this only happen on upchanging or downchanging? Or both?

Could be a worn engine mount. i.e. movement of the engine under load affects the gear linkage/cable causing difficult gear changes.

    First check gearbox oil.

Doubt it would be the engine mount, you would feel the movement through the box I would imagine.

though you shouldn't be putting your car into gear at 5500 revs, your kill your clutch and gearbox in no time doing that, and if your in the habit of dropping in the gears at high revs then your problems will more than likely be expensive.

It's a bit daft waiting till 6k to change up on your engine as you're past the point of peak power delivery (5600 rpm BTW) - the red line is there to protect the engine from over revving!!

I'll be changing the gearbox oil on my F17 gearbox probably tomorrow if the weather holds out, I'll try and do a How-To on the procedure so you can do it to yours.
I've got a spare F17 box (standard box for 1.8 ) and I removed the base plate the other day, the amount of crap inside the box was amazing, not metal, didn't have any metal at all, I did have some little bits of what looked like grit but they could have found there way in through the open driveshaft holes. However if you do a change have a good look at whats lying at the bottom of the sump plate, any metal filings etc and you should be a bit worried. If you find a gear tooth then start crapping yourself
