    Killed the turbo again?

About 6 months ago I replaced my turbo with a new one (It was off someone who never fitted it so secondhand and cheap) because I was using oil. I couldnt see any smoke out the back so wasnt sure where it was going but the turbo seemed most likly.

When I removed the turbo there was about 3mm of play in the shaft which is why I thought the turbo was gone and using oil.

I fitted the new one (That had no play in the shaft) and it was still using oil (Again no smoke) so i thought that maybe the turbo was fine after all.

My car had hit 100k+ now so I have stripped it down and started on the rebuild I have again noticed the 3-4mm play in the shaft.

Is the shaft ment to have that much play or have I some how killed another turbo?????????

Have you remembered to replace the gaskets when fitting a new turbo on?

There should be a slight bit of play, because the bearings sit on a layer of oil

will move up and down, but shouldnt move in and out!

knackered turbos can mean afew things....

the engine its bolted 2 is running incorrectly (usually the case)

    the turbo is being overworked.

poor exhaust design can also lead to more vibration at the turbo and cause it to fail, also if you are getting turbine stall this can dmage a turbine and cause it to become out of balance and wont last long.
