    Looking at engines

Going with a mate to buy an engine for his astra next sunday. Deal has been done but would like to know if theres anything we can look at to make sure its all in good order so to speak.

The engine is already out of the car so no listening or seeing it running.

But its only got 12'000 miles on the clock so should be all good.

    Thanks in advance guys

If the deal's already been done, there's no point checking whether it's in good order - a contract is always enforceable once it's in place.

If it's already out of the car there's nothing to check, without dismanling it.

I'd be suspicious why it's been removed from the car to preclude any evaluation.

Check the colour of the oil?

Look inside the oil filler cap for any oil sludge inside the cam cover?

Sorry, its provisionally sold to my mate. The engine was removed due to a rear ender. Looks pretty tidy so should be no worries.

And before anyone asks why i havent mentioned what the engine is, its coz its a secret

If the engine's already been removed after a rear ender, I'd be very suspicious. Until that point the engine could have been run and listened to. What's the seller trying to hide?

Maybe he just wanted to get everything he could off the car then get rid of the shell, rather than have a smashed up astra parked on his drive for a couple of weeks while waiting for people to come around and listen to it running. Assuming this is a private seller, if it is a garage or scrap yard i'd be a bit weary.

Well, I wouldn't dream of buying an engine on these terms, at anything more than scrap value.

Take a risk if you want to.
