Not the most helpful reply! First off try to find where the noise is coming from. Does it happen everytime you start the car? cold/hot starts? Try starting the car without touching the steering wheel - check under the bonnet to see if noise is still present - this could help eliminate the PAS pump. (as that can be quite noisy at times due to high power consumption)

See what u can find with regards to the above and report back - we will then try and help u as much as possible and give u the feedback u need.

    Good luck.

Might be worth getting the level of the power steering fluid checked. If you start the car, does it stay quiet until you move the steering wheel?

aha just as I suspected...my specialised subject! lol well first of all as the system is electric hydraulic it needs quite a bit of juice to work and the noise will be more noticeable under increased load especially at idle with all lights on etc.... As already said - make sure it is topped up and ideally with the correct Vx green stuff (part number 9316054 and not ATF. The noise could be a number of things...the pump could be on its way out (fingers crossed it isnt - but if it is - its not a major job - Ive changed the pump several times and its fairly simple) ur battery and/or alternator may be to blame but usually this would result in total loss of power assistance.

I think the best thing to do is just keep an eye on it - from experience Ive found that some units are deadly silent and others have a slight whine - nothing to worry about if all else is ok - keep monitoring it and if it does go tits up - let me know and I'll help u out some more

My Astra does exactly the same thing. The garage I bought it from said that the noise was 'normal' for PAS that was electrical. I've had the car for over 2 years now and the noise has not got worse. It is loudest at start up and quiter whilst driving - although this could just be the road noise drowning it out. I've listened to other Astra's and they don't seem to do it - so sounds like, as was said, some are quiet and some are noisy.
