Special delivery should be covered up to £250 i belive, recorded is something under £50
Tell who you sent it to, to keep all packaging, as if you make a claim it will be inspected to see if it was packed correctly, if it was then depending on the state of the box they will pay out, if not they wont.

Then it takes around 3 months to get them to pay out (Well did in my case :@ and it was only £20!)

Go to the local postoffice and ask for a postal claim form (or something along those lines)

first off...did u send it Recorded Delivery (orange labels) or Special Delivery (silver labels). Recorded only covers upto 100 times the price of basic weight 1st class postage (ie £32 presuming 1st class is 32p)... Special Delivery covers up to £500 for lost or damaged items.

For more info check out www.royalmail.com or call 08457 740740.

Above info taken from the reverse of the orange/silver address labels.

Thats why i send everything in a box 10 times too big for them, but add loads and loads of bubble wrap and polysteryne (sp?) bits so not even being hit by a car could damage the contents lol.
