The plug is on the bottom of the sump, and it stops the oil running out.

And it's advisable to get a new one for an oil change

    TOO SLOW! LOL!

You will need to replace the rubber 'o ring' each time you remove your plug, costs about 8p IIRC.

    Happy oil changing

first mission for everyone should be to lose the god damn awful plug that comes with the car and replace it with one from a mk2 astra (save size.. only has sensible head)

I've had to drill out 1 of the new types before and thats not nice.. so yeah get a sensible 1.

I dont change my plug often now... and washer maybe once every 2-3 years

I've only changed my plug once as the torx bit started chewing up, I've
always replaced the 'o ring' each time I do an oil change though.

That's the problem - most people (including) garages tend to do up the sump plug F'tight, and it doesn't need to be. So it becomes a ballache to get the damn thing out after a few changes as the torx socket chews up.

    FYI
    SOHC
    Steel sump - 55nm/41lbf ft
    Alloy sump - 45nm/33lbf ft

    DOHC
    1.4, 1.6 & 1.8
    ...torx - 14nm/10lbf ft
...Hex nut - 45nm/33 lbf ft
    2.0 - 10nm/lbf ft
    2.2 - 25nm/18lbf ft

see, not that tight at all. So if it's torqued up right from the last time, all you'll need is the washer, but chances are that the nut is chewed so it's best to replace, so it comes out easy next time

The plug, "plugs" the hole at the bottom of the sump to stop the oil running staight through when you fill it up. And you remove it to drain the oil out
