Question computer help needed. temp internet files

computer help needed. temporary internet files

dont worry it's not a question about how to delete all the history of p0rn on my computer ha ha, my laptop is so full of shlt that would make no difference. - the question concerns my dads PC

    if i goto

my computer -menu: tools > folder options > views > show hidden folders and files

    so nothing is hidden

    then goto

    c:\ > documents & settings > "dad" > local settings > temporary internet files >

    there are no folders

if you delete everything in the folder either manually or via

control panel > internet options > temporary internet files > delete files

    it will seem empty

    however.....

if i run Norton virus scan, or Ad-Aware spyware scan

it will spend ages and ages searching thousands of files and folders in

    c:\ > documents & settings > "dad" > local settings > temporary internet files >

how/why does it do this ? is it normal ?

where are these mystery files hiding?

    thanks for your help
    Ian

Do you have multiple users ?

Sounds like it's scanning 'dad's' temp internet files

eh ?? It IS scanning 'dads' temp internet files, i told you that ha ha ??

but anyway - This is on windows XP

There are 2 user accounts - 'mum' and 'dad'

    even if you go onto both users accounts seperately and clear all the temporary internet files in both folders;

    c:\ > docs & settings > "mum" > local settings > temp internet files >
    c:\ > docs & settings > "dad" > local settings > temp internet files >

then do a virus scan ...

the scan STILL shows it is looking in/at folders and files in 'dads' temporary internet files

but i cant see them or delete them

Do you have system restore switched on?
Are you deleting the files or just sending them to the recycle bin?
Does it make any difference if you restart the PC after deleting said files?

You can try deleting them using Internet explorer.

Open IE, Tools > Internet Options

In the middle of the screen you get the option to delete files, click this then check the delete all offline content box, and click ok.

If this fails to remove them you can delete them using DOS (As this will remove all files from the Temp folder).

You would need to launch the command Prompt by typing cmd in the run box and pressing ok.

Then browse to the temp files folder using the CD command, E.G "CD Temp" or "CD Documents*" <--use the * to make long folder names shorter (you ned to change each folder seperatly). If you go to deep you can go up a level using "CD.."

Once you are in the temp internet files folder, if you type "del *.* /s" this will delete all files/subfolders.

**** Do not use the del *.* /s command from anywhere else as is can cause serious harm to your PC **** I Also except no responsibility for any damage caused while performing the above actions

One correct way of clearing them is to go into 'My Computer' Right click C (or if which ever one windows is installed on. Go into properties and do a disk clean up, this will remove all unneeded stuff off the pc.

Just be aware that some viruses/spyware house themselves in that area and are hidden, system files which normal select all and delete methods will not remove. For this you need special knowledge, which I am happy to depart. But please first of all try the suggestions below and if they are of no use then please say so and I shall go into how to delete these files.
