    Question Intake help??? opinions please

Fitted my K&N panel filter today (thanks Norm)
and was tightening up a few jubilee clips that seemed a little loose around the whole intake generally.

Was wondering what exactly is the purpose of the box attached to the side of the final pipe before it goes into the engine (sorry for being non technical)??

Can you replace/upgrade these?? only I'm limited for power on my N/A 1600 obviously, but I wouldn't mind improving throttle response and things like that.....

    what ya reckon?

It'll be the intake plenum. It's pretty much there to kill intake noise.

    NOISE??? is that all?
hmmm, so surely without it on (as i'm assuming the some of the air is lost inside it) there would be a more direct flow to the throttle or whatever??

Am I on the right track here?

In the past on single point injection cars (like the X16SZR) the plenum uas were the air and fuel mixed before going into the intake manafold.

As the Z16XE I don't think has the same plenum as your Z16XEP, I recon it's just for reduction of intake noise. You could probably pick up an intake pipe from a Z16XE and use that, or cut out the existing one making sure to block up any holes created. I'd just hack it out, and use some PVC pipe weld and bits of the plenum cut out to fill the gaps.

Can you post a better pic of the pipe, preferably from underneath?

it looks the same from both sides tbh,
I was thinking of replacing it with one piece of silicon hosing if it does nowt!
Although it does look bare with out it, so I might make some sort of cover to go over the gap i'll create by removing it.

It reduces pressure pulsations which smooths the air flow giving a more consistent throttle response. Noise reduction is secondary.

It takes energy to "create" sound so the quieter the intake the more efficient it will be - just not good for your image though!

But what I get is that mine is the only one i've seen?!
My mates 1.8 don't have one, nore his onld 1.4 and I haven't seen one lurking in anyones engine bay on here as of yet?!
So I don't see the point of it

The point is to make the intake flow more efficiently.

The 1.8 has vibration damper chambers in the pipe between the grill inlet and the airbox. Each engine is different as the airflow tuning relates to engine capacity and cam phasing.
