    Oil Question

Now that my Astra Sporthatch 1.9 CDTi has done nearly 7000 miles I think its time to change the oil......

The question I have is what oil to use.....I am pretty useless when it comes to this and the last thing I wanna do is put the wrong oil in......lol

The service book says its comes with 5w-40 as standard. Is this fully synthetic? Is fully synthetic better?

    Cheers for your help

I topped mine up and could only get the oil at a main dealer - It was VERY expensive.
Just had a service too and I paid the extra £15 for a fully synthetic oil change instead of semi - You can use either but I don't believe in skimping on oil. Fully synth lasts longer.
Mine's done 18k - I reckon you'll be okay for a good few miles yet.
Feels better for the oil change though.

How are you finding the car? Used to the power delivery yet? Took me a while.

corrupthalo, if you're in Belfast, nip into Autoglass on Ormeau Rd and pick up some Silkolene or Fuchs fully synthetic. They distribute it here in the North, so prices are as keen as you'll get. It's excellent oil as well. Silkolene and Fuchs are the same people, Silkolene is just the "retail" name for the same oil.

I personally use Fuch Titan SynDiesel 10W40 in mine - it's a fully sythetic with additives to deal with the soot produced by diesel engines.

When you're getting the car serviced at the dealers, give them the same oil. I stupidly forgot last service, and they put in their usual semi-synthetic crap. The mechanic next door changed it after 3000 miles and he said it looked like it had been in there for years.

    Renault diesels always eat turbos.

You should be fine with the Vauxhall diesel turbos - they generally last well as they're genuine Garrett and not some french tat.

Even my old 2.0DTi will try and light the tyres in the dry in 1st and 2nd, let alone in the wet. Traction control is hard at it most of the time.

I would use something like Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40, it's a decent oil at a reasonable price. A fully synthetic as well.
