Sometimes I wonder if I'm a naturally unlucky person or whether the car is doomed! After the weird darkened paint problem on the boot I go out last night, put something in the boot, shut the lid and it basically just bounces back open again. The boot latch won't latch/lock on to the pin and so the boot is permanently open.
If I try the central locking then I can hear the 'click' in the boot but it has no effect on the latch itself and the boot is still openable! If I put the key in the lock and turn it to locked position that doesn't work either. In fact as I turn the key I can feel some resistance, as if you're overwinding a clockwork toy. However, I've never really locked my boot using the key so this could be normal!
Anyway, has anyone had this before? I need to get it sorted asap, obviously, so do you think I'll need a completely new locking mechanism? I think it's more the latch initially locking itself onto the pin thing to keep the boot shut (even if the car is unlocked) rather than the central locking not doing it's job, if you see what I mean?! But then I guess it could be all related. Not sure how the mechanism works. There's a little black bit within the silver latch part that seems to accept the pin on the boot itself and then rotate round it. The black part is movable with my finger. That should keep the boot shut but maybe a spring has gone?
Any ideas of cost (for the latch plus the key barrel bit if that's knackered also)? I'm hoping that it'd be pretty easy to fit myself as I'm hoping it'll be a case of screwing the new latch into place and re-connecting the central locking wires? Or something like that anyway! The other question is, if you replace the barrel do you have to pay extra to get the right key lock? If it's a spring issue can the lock/latch unit (the bit sticking out the boot not the barrel lock) be opened up easily? Is any of this covered under standard warranty (year 3)?
Sorry for the essay.. majorly p!ssed off at the moment, esp with round the corner. Think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and get the credit card out to get this and the paint prob sorted asap.
