    Traction Control Function on MK4s.

Got the new toy today, a CDX Estate with Tech pack and Leather pack.

I bought it as salvage and have been repairing it.

It had a broken CV joint and tie rod, which I've replaced.

I ran the car on an axle stand to check there's no vibration, indicating other damage.

The ABS sounds like it's cutting in and the ESP/TC warning Lamp flashes.

If I give it some revs, it was regularly spinning the grounded wheel (not much weight on it).

I'm well familair with the TC on Cavalier, Omega and Vectra B V6s, and the TC just cuts power to the engine, and spinning one wheel, just puts the ABS into fault after a while.

Do all the MK4s operate the brakes, or has this got ESP?

dont quote me on this one but from what i believe the mk 4 astras do it electronicly and reduce the power to the wheel that is spinning or loosing traction.

im fairly sure, the mk4 uses brakes as well as cutting power, I think it even mentions it in the manual.

I have simple "Traction Control" not esp and once i had an error and the tc light and abs came on. its definately linked in some way. as even the tc switch runs off the abs plug.

Yeah, the TC and ABS ECUs are the same thing in Vectras and Omegas too.

Not got a Manual for it unfortuantely, but I have several Sales Brochures, and never read it there.

If you run the car off the ground so the front wheels are turning and the rear wheels are not the car thinks there is a traction problem so the traction control will cut in. See it from the cars point of view. Front wheels rotating and rear wheels not must mean the car is wheel spinning so the traction control is trying to stop it.

    Yeah I know the principle

Just on the Cavalier and Vectra, it goes into fault after a while when the rear wheels don't move at all.

I've a similar spec CDX, Leather, Tech Pack but a saloon.

    It doesn't have ESP.

The TC is two stage - at low levels of intervention the engine power is progressively cut and at high level individual wheel(s) are braked.

The TC is a pain in the butt on snow though, I was pretty much stuck last winter when I couldn't get moving on compacted snow.

My DTi has at least two way traction control, but I have a sneaking suspicion it may have ESP, as it'll kick the brakes on if I freewheel into the carpark at work and do a hard steer on the slippy surface. I'd need to get it on Tech2 to confirm though (as my SXi has other bits it shouldn't like heated electric mirrors, and it was a Vauxhall Fleet car originally too).

lol, my Cavalier was crap in the snow, and I had the TC off.

215s and snow just don't mix.

Much better on the 195 winter tyres, but still not as nimble as the MK3 Astra.
