    suspension question......

    hi,

this is probably a very dumb question to ask but i thought this website woudl be the best to ask it on as its a very friendly atmosphere.

i have been told my front shock absorbers need replacing as they are leaking oil.

i currently have KW coilovers on my car and im not sure what shock absorbers are currently on the car.

    my question is,

can i replace the shocks on my car with standard ones and still keep the coilovers on aswell?

or do my coilovers have to come off if i am to use standard shocks?

i am asking this as i have just been to the garage to ask the mechanic to order me some standard astra front shocks and he has told me he will get some but i will need to replace the springs aswell and has said to look at lowering springs.

im not sure if he has said this because i took my car there the other day to raise the suspension so i dont scrape speed bumps (this couldnt be done as someone has rounded off the head of the grub screw or something???) and he is still thinking along the lines of raising my car, or by putting standard shocks back on i have to take the coil overs off?

    so questions are:

    a) can you run on coilovers with standard shocks?
    b) if not, does that mean i have to change my whole suspension set up?

ps. if it is possible to run coilovers on standard shocks it will only be a temporary fix as i am saving for some uprated ones.

    Thanks in advance

    Andy

The coilover springs and shocks would need to be matched to each other...
so to use whichever is still okay with a standard part - is not a good idea.

If you've ordered standard shocks, then you can have lowered springs - but not recommended to go below 40-50mm drop....

You are okay to have coilovers rear - standard front (or lowered standard front)...as long as you keep the same per axle it should be safe enough.

Maybe worth getting intouch with LMF or similar to see about ordering new FK front shocks to match the kit...

does that mean i can get away with standard shocks fro a short while or wont they work.

the reason i ask is that i would like my car to be sorted so i dont have knackered shocks.

even if its until i get the uprated ones through ( i have just emailed LMF for a price)

1~the springs from the coilovers won't fit onto standard shocks
2~just a thought but what wheels have you got on? will they clear standard shocks or were the coilovers fitted for extra clearance
