I picked mine up on friday (1.7cdti sxi estate) and to be honest i am suprised how quick it is i have just come from a Golf GTi 1.8 turbo (150bhp) and it feels nearly as quick. Ok it wont win races but it is still better than expected.

Just to help it along though i have ordered a powerclick CR from dtuk for £225 to put the power over 120bhp then it should be good enough.

The 1.7 is the oldest engine in the Mk5, being the old 1.7DTi with common rail wedged on. The engine dates back to the Isuzu 1.7D engine in the early Mk3 Astra.

In all honesty, the 1.3 90PS and 1.9 120PS both kick the living daylights out of the 1.7 for refinement. The 1.3 with the 6-speed is the best option if you're going for a pauper spec Astra, the 1.9 the best for the higher spec ones.

Yup it's what I have. It is an old unit unfortunately, so therefore more harsh than you'd find the 1.9, but still smoother than the crappy 1.7 TD found in the MK4 which was as gutless as they come.

The common rail diesel 1.7 in the MK5 is fairly nippy actually. No powerhouse, but it's pretty good for city driving. I actually find it adequate for my needs even on long motorway journeys.

It's got a lot of low end torque which is why it feels quite nimble.

Mine is the 'Design' and love the spec on it.

i test drove a 1.7 CDTi sporthatch in february and they are extremely fast on pick up speed because of the turbo.

I was driving next to a M3 in Bradford at 30mph roughly and the guy in the M3 thought he was ace in his M3 so the guy from JCT600 told me to put my foot down a bit and i left the M3 standing.

Although you can get a 1.9 CDTi too i think

That does seem a bit hard to believe. I have an Astra Sport Hatch 1.9 CDTi 150 SRi and I don't think even that would leave an M3 standing, so how a 1.7 could is beyond me.

Anyway, the 100PS 1.7 is a good engine, goes quite well for what it is. The only problem is that the 1.9 is better in almost every area.

A 1.9 wouldn't even keep up with an M3 full stop!! It would leave the 1.9 for absolute dust. I can see this thread being hotlinked to an e36 forum!
