    automatic choke

when my car is idling the revs increase by about 500 every 20 seconds. Is this the automatic choke or is it the timing for the valves. It sounds like there might not be enough petrol getting to the cylinders, ive checked the air filter and thats fine. its really pissing me off.

    any help will be appreciated

sounds like the typical Vx dodgy idle issue - usually remedied by cleaning the Throttle Boddy, ICV & EGR.

What engine & year is it - as the above doesnt always apply.

    Just noticed u have a 1.4 8v Mk3

so would recommend cleaning the throttle body with some carb cleaner, the Idle Control Valve and also the Exhaust Recirculation Valve... This would be a good starting point. Someone will be along soon and prove/disprove my ideas!
