    2.2 Burning Oil

I have to top up my oil up once every couple of months with about a Litre i do around 400miles aweek.

    Is this normal?

There is no leaks on the drive, but the worring thing was a friend followed me the other day, i had to get round a car and booted to nearly 6K he said he could see a fair amount of dark smoke blow from my car

I then started my car this morn and i saw signs of smoke coming from the zorst.

There is no milky susbtance in the oil cap, so i got my GF to follow me today and after the engine was warm i booted she said she couldnt see any sign of smoke at all.

Does this sound normal, the car runs fine and pulls well.

If its burning oil then blue smoke will come out of the exhaust when you boot it, Dark smoke is normally due to a rich fuel mixture or "Carbed up" (Carbon fouling) Or even a dirty air filter can make the engine produce a dark smoke-almost like soot-to come out the exhaust.

I have the same car, I never have to top mine up. I know of a few other 2.2 cars that do the same as yours though, it may be normal-ish

tbh u may just be experiencing the typical Vx oil consumption - Vauxhall specify approx 1litre of engine oil consumed in 1000miles as acceptable. This would tie in with what u are reporting - in fact you're doing better than Vx say so I'd say all was running as expected.

The smoke u report on the other hand may be an issue. Sadly I cant comment on that matter so I'll hand u over to the pros!

Cheers Geordie Bandit! (Thats one thing solved)

The smoke had a more blue tinge to it then dark (Diesel smoke) , So my friend said.

    So what do you think?

If it's when you boot it, then it's the valve stem oil seals that are fubared.

I bet you didnt own it from new did you?

My zaffy i had from new, after 10,000 miles, it had its 1st service, and the oil was still on max, just has it was when i left the dealership with 14miles on the clock.
the salesman did say though to keep an eye on my oil level and check it everyweek, which i did, basically, if from new you dont thrash it for the 1st 1500miles, you wont have the problem your having.

A new vauxhall at work, was thrashed from day one, it likes a 1L top up every week, it near enough does 1000 miles a week.

Hope this helps, i know you dont have to wear in a new VX engine according to most salesmen, but it really does help, HONEST!

UK Engineer, Thanks for that, no i didnt own it from new I bought it with 40K on the clock.

Ffoeg, is the stem oil seals expensive to replace? But the car doesnt snoke if the engine is warm, like i tested it today? but did when i started it from cold,
