check the alternator output - its probably donald ducked!

the plus and minus in the box is the Battery symbol. This indicates the battery is not charging. Therefore your alternator is dead.

if u have access to a multi meter - measure the voltage across the terminals with the engine running. It should measure approx 14.4v with no accessories (heated window, heaters etc) switched on. Obviously if u cant start or have trouble starting the car this would confirm the fault. If the alternator has died - it may actually be over charging as well as under charging. If it over charges then it still needs to be replaced as it could burn the battery out over time.

the power steering in the Astra G is an Electric Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering setup and takes it feed from the alternator. As soon as the alternator dies - you lose power assistance.

if it was just the steering goin solid as u say then it could be a faulty power steering pump as I used to have...

    BUT

as u mentioned the battery light this indicates a definite fault in the charging circuit. As the car still starts ok I think the alternator may be overcharging and would recommend u get it checked out asap. If the output of the battery when running is over 14.6volts then this would confirm my suspicions.

A replacement alternator can be had for about £50 on ebay or if u shop around - god knows what a garage would charge. Good luck and keep us posted.
