    Handbrake...!

    Hi,
i've got a problem with my handbrake on my w 2000 1.8 sri as in one side the calliper/cylinder has ceased and wont apply.I did ease this a few months ago but has ceased again.Does anyone know how much these are and where i can buy the part from as vx will prob charge the earth as i'll prob need to renew both sides!
I've had look for spares on ebay but am unsure as to the correct part name im looking for.

    Cheers

Quick question to clarify something - have the calipers got four lateral ridges across the back of them (two near the top and two near the bottom)?

Thought so - you've got the crappy bosch calipers that were fitted to ealry MK4's.

Your best bet is to dump them and get some Lucas ones - VX changed the Boschs for Lucas in later models. They are a straight swap, but you'll need a new handbrake cable, and pads too.

There's a few on eaby at the mo, at a very good price - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Zafir...QQcmdZViewItem

    Thanks for help,
My mate was the one who freed my ceased handbrake as im not that good regarding brakes,I was assuming the handbrake assembly was seperate to the main disc and pads!
So on my astra is the handbrake actually part of the main calliper assembly and i actually need the whole unit as to speak?

You may unseize it - but it will only be short lived as they are basically crap, and best got rid off. Although they do make good doorstops

The handbrake cable is a seperate part, but specific to the calipers, so you'll need to replaece it should you change to lucas. That goes for the pads as well.

    Hi,
Yes im looking to replace the callipers,i actually thought they would cost in the region of £100 a side so a little relieved there cheaper than that.I will get my local garage to do the swap to be on the safe side and in mean time will keep a look out for callipers for my year 2000 or will the 2001 actuallt fit too?
    Many thanks matey,really appreciate it.

Those on the eaby are the Lucas ones and will be a straight swap for yours - they are just a different (better) make.

VX stopped using the Bosch and started using Lucas in about 2000/2001

You don't need to change the handbrake cable Geoff, that's only needed when you change from drums to discs. The Bosch one fits the Lucas no problem. I've sold 4 sets of Lucas calipers and nobody has changed a cable yet.
