you can get anything chromed...there are a few chroming companys about, best to have a search and speak to one...might be some issues with the engine cover being subject to a lot of heat

Well the cover's made of plastic, so you'd not be using nickel plating. Even then on alloy, you're far better off polishing and nickel-plating doesn't work particularly well on alloy. You basically need to mirror polish it to begin with, then copper plate it before chroming. It's very expensive and not worth it since you can get a deeper shine from polishing alloy if it's of good quality.

As for plastic, I'm sure you're aware, you cannot actually chrome in the traditional sence. You have to get it spray chromed with a special paint. The engine cover won't absorb much heat due to its plastic construction and the reflective finish on the chrome spray will reflect the heat. So I can't see that being too much of a problem.

Get it done by the pros. You can get rattle can chrome paint from Halfrauds but it's not very good. Depends on what quality of finish you want. There's a chap over on the 300ZX forum that I use who's very very skilled. Basically he restores cars (Ferraris, Aston Martins etc), trikes, and also finishes helmets and other things. Sprays in candy, chrome, all sorts.

Someone like him would be your best bet.
