Chappy noise!? never heard that expression before! anyway, to see if your alternator is on the way out a good test is get a long scewdriver or long piece of metal and just touch it on the alternator outer casing whilst its running (being careful not to slip!) and then put your ear to the other end. The metal will act as an amplifier. If its sounds like a bag of BB's in tumble dryer then your bearings are shot. Try at different points on the alternator.

Anther way to test is to get a multimeter and put it across the battery (with the car off) and read the voltage - it should be 12v, then start the car and let it idle, make sure all electrics are off, and with the car running put the multimeter across the battery again, it should read around the 14v mark. If the reading is above or below that it could be a sign that the alt is on the way out.

When my alternator died it was charging the batt at 19v! Hope that helps!

other option is to slip off the alternator belt.. engine should run ok for a little while before the battery dies.

And at least then you'll know if its the alternator or anything else run off the same belt
