Hi all - Exactly a year since I got the car so thought I'd post my thoughts on it.
It replaced a Golf R32 (vandalised twice after a years ownership so had to go) so had a lot to live up to - Needed a subtle, quickish car with a decent boot.
Looks - One of the things that attracted me - Still think it looks great, especially with the fat tyres and 17" alloys, plus the dark rear glass and it's lowered too. Only things I don't like are the chrome and over fussy grill.
Quality - Bit of a shock for me - Less rattles than the Golf and a very solid dash although a bit plasticky. Seats are well made and the headlining is made from tough stuff too.
Handling - Another suprise - Very sorted chassis that you can really chuck around corners. Brakes are good too (308mm) and it grips hard on 225 tyres. Slightly scrabbly in the wet with the front tyres having to cope with a lot of torque.
Performance - Took me a while to get used to the diesel power characteristics - At first I didn't like it after the R32s excellent bhp and torque but I've got well used to it, have adapted my driving and can safely say that if driven properly, it's a genuinely quick car. I've upset plenty of reps and bazzers in it.
Practicality - Huge boot for a fairly compact car, rear seats lower easily (I carry surfboards and MTBs a lot), auto lights and wipers work well. Only downsides are an almost complete lack of stowage bins in the boot (for a little tool kit or to hide stuff) and no real cupholders.
Overall, a very good car and we got if for under £16k brand new.
Had a couple of problems - Grill chrome bubbled, had a dodgy electrical connection so it was cutting out and now the CD player keeps jumping but all have been or will be fixed under warranty.
Going to keep it for a while as the depreciation is dreadful but certainly not lusting after the next car - Yet.
