    Computeach Courses?

Just wondering, has any of you ever done any computeach courses?

Just got an info pack through them, the kind of place who gives you all the material and guarentee's you a job..

im not so much after the job, but am thinking about taking up a course to get more experience in one special subject, after my degree.

Anyone done similar, got any feedback etc?

    Cheers

I was interested in the computeach courses 2 years ago, but when they called back i felt as if they were just trying to sell me courses rather than giving me advice into which course to take. Which put me off. The gauranteed job part, according to a mate who undertook a similar course found that they were offereing jobs but you had to take one of the jobs that were offered out of so many regardless whether you were interested in it or not. So might be worth checking that part out first.
I eventually started with the OPen University for a computing Degree, which i am 2 years in now. It suits me as i have a full time job, but it does take up a lot of spare time i have found.

You mentioned your getting a Degree. Which Degree are you going for and from your opinion are you glad you've reached that stage? Sorry for being too nosey but i am curious as sometimes i tend to think is it all worth it and have been tempted to quit, but i have stuck with it now and am hoping to carry till i achieve the Degree in Computing.

Hey there, firstly, offtopic, where abouts in the West Mid's are you? This region seems to be growing loads lately, get yourself registered on the region part of the forum

My particular subject, im doing a Degree in Computer Science: Software Engineering which is basically programming etc, but its too broad.

So far in the 4 years ive covered everything, programming apps, website design, games development and databases, and now i want to focus on one main area, such as database admin, or web designer, or anything really.

A lot of jobs ive seen so far seem to be after one main subject, and im not sure how confident i'd feel in one singular subject, as ive never studied just one subject for a long period of time.

yea, the last thing i want is to just be sold a course, with no advice, help, benifit as thats just wasting my time and money.

As i say, i'll have a BSc Hons Degree in Computer Science: Software Engineering, and to be honest, not sure how i feel at the moment.

Yea im going to come out of uni with a degree, but even with one of those these days, its still hard finding a decent job, thats enjoyable.

Its software dvelopment i seem to be keen on but at the moment one of my courses has touched database design which seems interesting. A bit mind dumbing but i'm taking it in. All the 2nd and 3rd normal forms is abit of a brain ache though but got it right on my assignment so must be doing something right.

Thanks for the help offer mate.

Im keen to start programming in java or C++ as i have not yet had much do with these languages, but i think i'm gonna have to get a few books and like you say learn stuff myself to get the hang of the structure of the languages.
I'm learning all the theory side to the structure of programming at the moment which to be honest gets a bit tedious with the algebra and logic. I cant wait to actually get stuck into the programming on the practical side.
This is where the database design has been touched on as well as programming in JavaScript which i have enjoyed so far.

I'm on the other side of Brum in the Bourville/Selly Oak area.

Basically I been working in the IT Industry for over 10 years and Its still very much the catch 22 but thankfully there are a lot more graduate recruitment programmes

Like the other posts the guarantee of a job is more marketing hype. My brother was forced into taking a job that was supposed to be IT Help desk but in reality was a customer service role for an car parts distributor.

I doubt you will get sound career advice from these courses. At the end of the day they are in business to give training

    My advice is this...

I was part of a grad recruitment drive for the software company that I was working at. All the grads were applying for a software development or business analyst roles.

While discussing the grads it was obvious that the degree didnt allow the grads to specialise enough in programming etc.

From our perpective (Interviewers) we were comparing the grads on the following:-

    1) Ability to work in a team
    2) Communication
    3) Technical abilty

so where am i going with all this?

Differentiation!! What makes you different from the rest?

If one of the grads I interviewed has tech ability then that person providing they had 1 and 2 sorted, would have been taken on for sure!

So how do i get tech ability?

    Certification (Microsoft, Cisco etc)

These exams are aimed at IT professionals who have been working in the industry and want qualify their knowlegde. It also gives a employers an additional way to differiante you from other CV's over an above the normal methods

You study for the exams by taking courses or using the self pace training books and then take the exams at a testing centre

For software development I suggest following both the:-

    MCSD (Software Developer Track)
    MCDBA (Database Administrator Track)

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/msdn/lea...eneration.mspx

Signup for the techy sites to learn from other IT Pros

Another thing is demonstrating that you understand best practises and standards in what area of IT your in.

Reading newsletters, white papers give you insider information of ideas, best practises etc. signup for the following sites newletters:-

    www.techrepublic.com
    www.searchsqlserver.com
    www.searchwindows.com
    www.devx.com
    www.exchangeserver.org
    www.searchvb.com
    www.isaserver.org
    www.microsoft.com/

Read the forums (Like this one)

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/com...s/default.mspx

    Learn other Technologies

Basically learn as much as possible in the area your going into and study to become an expert in that field (Similar to doctors who become specialised in a choosen field)

My post is very much Microsoft as thats the industry I work in but I hope you get the gist.

Feel free is PM me if you want any other help
