    Question F17 or F18 Gearbox?

Trying to source a new/refurbished box for my motor and I'm hearing from diifferent places that one minute it is an F17 that I need and the other is F18 that I need.

Iv'e been told by a former VX Tech that it is an F18.

I have looked on the side of the box and cleaned it up to try and find the number but there was nothing on there, found numbers on top the box housing but they dont seem to relate to the model.

Can anyone clarify what box I definately do require, the car is a 1.8 Astra Coupe, Petrol, Manual 5-Speed G/box. Year: 2001 on 51 plate.

Usually the gearbox type is stamped on the top of the box just down and behind the gear selector housing, usually covered in oil !

Haynes manual says F17 for the 1.8. The 2.0 gets the F18.

AFAIK they won't be directly interchangable. The F17 is a 'small block' gearbox. F18 is a 'big block'

The engine will be Z18XE, a smallblock engine. The X18XE is bigblock and has never been fitted to Astra G (Mk4) or H(Mk5). The X18XE1 was fitted to Astras '98-'00 but was also smallblock.

So logically it must be F17, the F18 is for bigblock engines.

If you take the pass side wheel off and clean the end of the box up the code will be stamped there. It's really feint and looks like it's been written on in pencil, and it's quite a long code too, about 10 charcaters and the F17/F18 code will be in the middle of it.
