Hiya guys I've been using ur site for quite some time but only jus registered and first time asking for help so here it goes.
First bit about me and car. Im a first year student at middlesex uni travellin from walthamstow 2 hendon most days so ill post for any nice astra that catch my eye on the a406!
the car: my dad bought this 51 plate 1.6 SXI 5 door, prestige blue 2 years ago n since i passed jus over a year ago he hasnt seen much of it infact, he's covered less than a total of 100 miles in it and the other 10,000 was me! but n e way the cars great luv it to bits n take car of it too. service myself blah blah n jus fitted total closure module 2day thanks 2 ur how2!
ok now... the problem. For about 10 months or so i've had an intermittent problem with the speedometer. The problem was initially that once the car warmed up, mayb after 30 mins or so and after driving over plenty of typical London roads pot holes n speed bumps the speedo would begin 2 fluctuate. mostly only over bumpy surfaces and so on. it would go away for a week, then come bak again away for a month back for 2 months. just really odd. Just really made me think something was loose. about 10 months l8r its goin crazy! for about the past 2 weeks it has been constant, mostly from start 2 finish of any journy. the harder i drive the worse it seems to get bouncing like a nutter but then again sometimes half way through a journey it will work perfect for a few minutes. i've noticed its not too bad over some of the smooth new surfaces they have laid down over the a406. but its wild most of the way. Not giving any engine management lights or no other problems. I had a computer plugged into it last friday at a local garage and that gave no codes either. so what can it be?
Local Vaux breaker had a look and told me that the car doesnt have abs which im sure is right as the i've never noticed it kick in (its a 4 stud by the way) and he also said that the car will have 1 speed sensor on each hub and that is one part. He says it will be a costly job. Local garage man says needs 2 remove the dash 2 find out which speed sensor is faulty (if any) which will cost about £150 and then 2 replace hub will cost almost £200 with fitting. Phoned vaux technician he said if the car is non abs than there may still only be one speed sensor which can be replaced alone but if its 4 then a hub needs replacing. Any help will be appreciated on this matter as it really jus seems like something has come loose! and is getting very annoying specially with all the cameras that i have to pass daily on road these days!
Sorry for the really long story, expect mor of these i jus hav a habit of explainin fings in detail!
