    Key Blank with no electronics

    Hi,

I'm an Aussie Astra owner (The new one - AH). Now I've got a situation i thought would be easier to solve. I bought an astra wagon to fit a surfboard in, and its great! But obviously i can't take the key in the water because of the electronics. Now what ive done before i got a key cut without the electronics just to open the door, and i lock the real key in the car when i go surfing. When i went to get it done with this car the locksmiths said they dont have the blank and referred me onto holden to get the blank. When i went to Holden they offered me a new key for $100 but it was the key with all the electronics. Now i could buy that key, pull it apart so the bit that flicks out is all i carry, but thats an expensive way to do something that should cost me $5.

Anyone had any similar stories? And hopefully had success somehow. I'm very concerned that leaving the key wrapped up in a towel on the beach is going to get me into trouble sooner rather than later. I would think that Holden would be able to provide me with a blank. Possibly Vauxhall do?

    Thanks

I take it that you do not have a non-flip spare key then ?

You should be able to just get one of those...with no lock/unlock buttons.
It will still have a transponder in the keyfob though for the immobiliser.
Should be okay in water I think !

Alternatively get a lockable keybox attached to the car somewhere and just take the key for that box out...

nope, the spare key is a flip one aswell. according to holden all they're able to get me is the flip key.

I dont really want to go down a lockable keybox route, i feel much more confident wearing the key around my neck or in my legrope.

    It is a mk5 you have ?
Here's a pic of my keys one flip, the other non-flip.

I've opened up the non-flip one so you see what electronics are in it.
My thinking is that you could remove these and just use the key in the lock only, then you'd have to grab the keys from the car o put the alarm off (if fitted)

Is this the kind of key you need ?

    Easy solution.

Order a glove box lock like on the How-To. When I got mine keyed alike to the car it came with a perfect blank but entirely without the electronics piece. Just a plain old black key fob.

Still got it somewhere if you need a pic. Never tested it in the door as my car is delocked but it's indentical to the original key in shape.

In the UK you need the credit card size detail card and the registration documents as they are very security minded.

I definately wouldn't trust this. All you'd need would be one scummy theif to see u knock on the window an hey presto, say bye bye to your car
