    2.2 sri mileage

    Ello guys

Looking to swap the astra 1.6 for something bigger, sticking with vxl and have seen a Vectra 2.2 sri, 02 plate.

Very nice car, only thing is the mileage - 80,000.

Thought i'd ask here cos its the same engine as the 2.2 astra (i think)

Just wondering if that engine can cope well with big miles.
Is 80k ok? or are things likely to start going wrong soon?

I revved it at the garage, no test drive yet, and it sounded like the exhauast was blowing from the front somewhere.
Garage said it has only just come in a s a part ex, so needs a clean and a look over by their mechanics before i have test drive monday.

    Cheers for your help

my astra only just done 40k, had a few sensors go wrong so far, just always had quite low mileage cars and not sue about swapping car for one with double the mileage!

(edit - had a mk3 astra 1.7d (non turbo) that had 130K and kept going and going! hardly serviced in 3 years except for oil changes.)

I know diesels will do huge mileages but just not sure about the 2.2 petrol

The 2.2 is a good engine - has proven to do long milages in cars in the US.

If it's serviced regularly there's no reason why 200k shouldn't be easily possible.

put it this way, seeing as its done that kind of mileage in 4 years would more than likely been used on the motorway quite abit which is going to be better than having a lower mileage car that has only ever been used to just pop to the shops or what ever. My astra is on 96k and still goes fine

Thanks for the replys guys, still interested in the 2.2 vectra sri, but there's plenty of posts on the net saying the 2.2 engine has a problem with the timing chain breaking.

Soemthing to do with the oil getting blocked somewhere so no lubrication.

Obviously the chain is meant to last the lifetime of the car, so replacing the chain is a very expensive job.

What are your views on this?

Is the 2.2 best avoided cos of this? need a reliable car (as we all do!) should i get a 2litre instead?

Only a small number of 2.2 engines from waaaay back had the problem, and they usually died well before 60k.

    Heres all the details:

The chain needs to be replaced at 100,000 miles, it isnt meant to last the entire life of the car, it isnt as expensive as people think, about the same as a cambelt I think, also iirc the oil feed problem was on earlier 2.2's & was rectified before 2002
