    Dirt, oddly enough.

Usually carbon deposits that get suspended in the oil.

The additives in the oil get used up - causing the oil itself to degrade (oxidize or thicken). At that point, the oil must be changed, before sludge and desposits build up when the oil is drained, the contaminants are removed.

And even more simply than that, just cooling down makes oil thicker!

Was there a reason for this thread - or are we just hijacking for the sake of it??

The reason i asked was because i have been to my local vauxhall dealer and they have asked if i drove the car hard because they have noticed the oil to be thicker than it should be. Thanks for the sensible remarks but next time maybe i should'nt bother asking hey.

P.S I don't beleive i drive my car any harder than normal usage show that's why i have asked the question.

Sorry Stuart - couldn't resist it.

Fair question though - have you had the car long? ie was last oil change done under your ownership, or last owner?
